Choice & Destiny

Without going overboard, can we agree that all of us have a destiny? Some have an idea of what it is, some do not, and some are on a path of discovery to ultimately figure out what it is they are here for. What few understand is that whatever our destiny is, it is made up of all the choices we have made or will make in the future. Everything is a choice and we have the free will and ultimate right to make choices.Where it gets really interesting is that some of the choices we make are ultimately either towards or away from our destiny. Sometimes we know this going in, and well, sometimes we don’t – or at least that is what we tell ourselves afterwards.

The challenge now is knowing which choices are towards, and which ones are away from our destiny. To throw the proverbial wrench into the system, are you making choices towards or away from your destiny if you don’t know what your destiny is? Some people have decided that ‘their destiny’ is highly over-rated and not worth pursuing. Right or wrong, that is up to them to decide. The question which raises then is: what choices are THEY actually making and which are being made for them?

It is my current understanding that without even giving your destiny thought (which translates into not actually beginning the discovery or even creation process) the choices in your life are not under your control. How do you know what choices to make? Without even a vague direction in mind, every choice that is made is completely random in its purity. When you are spending your time making random choices, are you aware that others are making choices for you? Not likely as you have no ‘map’ to know that if a choice someone else has made for you is right or wrong/towards or away from a destination that you don’t even know of. What may seem like a good choice made by you or someone else, can be good, or it can be completely devastating. It’s almost like gambling, isn’t it?

For the purposes of illustration, think of a globe, and now think of your destiny being located somewhere in say, Greenland. Where exactly in Greenland isn’t known, but at least we have a good sense of where to look. Your destiny lies somewhere to the North of the Equator and you, are currently located somewhere ON the equator. Knowing that your destination (destiny) lies somewhere to the North of where you currently are, you would know that choices that led you South of the Equator were definitely AWAY from your destiny. Choices that led you either due East or West would although lead you towards or away from your destination at certain times, they would never actually take you to your destination – ever. Similarly, any choices that lead you at least above the equator were somewhat in the right direction. With enough choices that kept you above the equator, eventually you would come to your destiny. As your destiny becomes more clear, and more defined, a more specific point on the map can be seen and better choices/direction can be made. Would you rather be sitting in the Atlantic Ocean on a raft with no paddle trying to make it to Greenland, or on a state-of-the-art ocean cruiser with weather radar and GPS guidance systems trying to make it to Greenland? Sure, sitting in your raft you might catch the right current, with the right winds, and you might make it all the way to Greenland, but how long might that take? Can you survive that long? Can your raft?

Now, do I have all the answers regarding ‘Destiny’? Absolutely not… Well at least, not yet.. Your destiny is an individual adventure which you can CHOOSE to take, or not. The whole point here is to understand that we have choice. We have choice in everything we do and when we stop making choices we are at the mercy of others. Sure, we’re not going to make the best choices all the time, however, at least with the slightest inkling of what your destiny might be, you will at least then have a reference point to know the difference between choices that lead you towards or away from your destiny.

When you give up control over choices being made in your life, ultimately you give up control over your own destiny. A rather frightening thought when you think about it. Destiny is the sum of all the choices in your life. Some provide addition and some provide subtraction. It is my belief that with a destiny in mind, the choices that provide addition become easier to recognize, and easier to choose whereas choices which do not go off like an air-raid siren with big, blinding, flashing red lights.
