Successful Blog – 11.5 Rajesh Setty – About the Book: How It Got Published:
Raj, how did an IT consultant convince a publisher that he was qualified and able to write a book on how people might distinguish themselves to lead a fuller more successful life? What did you learn from the experience? What advice for future writers do you have to share?
While wandering through the ever popular SOB, I came across the above posting about an IT consultant who wrote a book where,
“He shared his personal story, how team loyalty and individual goals can work together, “The Inner Game†of attitudes and philosophy about career, life, and ambition, and “The Outer Game†of learning leadership.”
Rather interesting! Although written for the IT professional looking to succeed in a long term career in IT, I think if nothing else it provides hope for the rest of us. Here we have an IT consultant talking about the inner and outer game! Excellent!
In the blog article (which is actually an interview with the author), his number one point for advice for making his book happen is “Gain credibility to write the book” which brings up a rather interesting point I’ve been thinking about lately… Where is the line of acceptable credibility?
Sure, slap on some letters after your name and automatically your credibility is elevated. What about for those of us who don’t have ‘the letters’, or the 30 years of experience in field ‘X’? Does it all come down to the sales job? I’m a 30 year old guy deeply delving into the realm of self image without a PHD, a masters, or even a degree in anything. I have no ‘formal’ training on the subject but I wonder if I need it? Who better to write on the subject than me?
At this point I quickly realize that I’m going to have to work on my sales pitch to overcome peoples expectation of credibility in the traditional sense and essentially get the point across that hey, I don’t have a PHD in psychology, but you know what, if that is what it take to dramatically improve our self image through understanding, then very few of us would have a great outlook on the future… I guess it all comes down to the fact that if I can do it, understand how I did it, and then teach it to those who are willing to listen, they can do it too..
