Aaaahhhhh…. Personality Tests….

Ok, I’ll admit it… Hi, my name is Bill, and I’m a personality test junkie.
While rummaging through my bookmarks looking for something important (no, seriously!), I came across an old link to my PersonalDNA personality test and apparently I am:
Now, am I really an ‘Independant Inventor’ like the test suggests? This test puts me as such, another calls me a ‘Strategic Planner’, and yet another calls me ‘Mr. Spock’… On the whole I would say that this particular test is about 95% accurate compared to my current self image with only a couple items listed that I do not see as being true.
The nice thing about the items that are ‘not accurate’ are definitely things that SHOULD be accurate for me. Should be in the sense that they are currently points of weakness and if simply improved upon would see great changes in my life.
I believe that tests such as these are quite useful in understanding where we currently are and how we currently see ourselves. Because understanding ourselves is such a critical component to our self image and our overall self confidence I’m all for them… Now, the “Which Star Trek Character Are You?” personality test might not be as accurate as say a Myers Briggs or a Kolbe, however, amusing none the less.
These tests provide us with possible insights as to how we function and operate in our daily lives typically on an instinctual level. I always find it intriguing when I come across a trait that I have that gets the response “Ah, so THAT’S why I do that…”.
I think that there is a fine line to walk when it comes to personality tests simply because they can be used as an excuse for behavior rather than just good insight. There is nothing worse than someone taking a test and now having proof of why they act like a jerk! In the spirit of personal and professional development these tests can be fantastic TOOLS for understanding ourselves as well as others and of course, should be used as such.
And remember, we have the unlimited right to make choices and changes in our lives and a simple ‘personality’ test can never summarize the whole.

We are always fascinated to learn about ourselves, even to take the information we gather with a grain of salt. I blogged about two groups of professionals who often seem to pull in different directions: sales and marketing. And used the information learned from an instrument called The Birkman Method to show why, etc.
The link to Sales is from Mars, Marketing is from Venus is here http://conversationagent.typepad.com/conversation_agent/2006/12/sales_is_from_m.html
You are absolutely correct — we can choose, and we should.
