We are Fragile.

Several months ago Eric Jacobs of Two Rivers Marketing woke up in the middle of the night because of a dream he had that he died young. He was compelled to record himself using the video camera on his computer. He left an intense message to his family filled with love and tears. He said goodbye to them—and then went back to bed.

Not long after that recording—a few weeks I think, Eric and three co-workers (above) were killed in a small plane crash near South Bend. Eric’s premonition was tragically realized. He leaves behind four boys and a wife expecting their fifth.

Shortly after, Eric’s wife found a DVD laying atop of his living will with this written on it: “Eric’s Last Words”

We are fragile. Yet we spend the bulk of our time worrying about the pressures of everyday life. We worry about who’s linking to us and who’s not.

Wow. I always surprises how things come around. I received a comment from David at Logic+Emotion congratulating me on my BAD Blogger call and recognition. Running a blog with a similar name I come across David’s blog quite often and will likely continue to do so in the future.

I finally made a point of visiting David’s blog this morning to do more than a cursory view and actually spend some time reading…. I didn’t make it very far as the first post listed today is the one mentioned above.

There is no doubt that many people shift in their seat a bit while reading it and I know I did!

9 years ago (wow, has it been 9 years?!), I had a similar experience in that I watched a news report teaser about a plane crash – one of those ‘we know you’re watching a different show now, but later when the news comes on, this is what our top stories are’ type things. I remember thinking at the time that I would have to call a friend of mine to see what she knew about the crash because she was a flight instructor at the airport that the plane was from. This was Sunday night.

A couple days later I was on my way home from finishing a delivery route and I got a call from another friend… I knew in an instant that the plane crash was my instructor friend. What really got to me was that I had ‘seen’ the news footage on Sunday night. The crash happened on Monday and the footage wasn’t shown on the news until Monday night. Ok, well perhaps I got my days mixed up? Nope, Sunday night I was at a friends house watching TV and Monday night I was in bed without TV because I used to get up at 4am on Tuesdays to drive truck.

Can I explain it? Nope. Could Eric from Two Rivers Marketing explain it? Nope. I do believe these events do happen and I have no idea why. I do believe that everything happens for a reason and there are lessons to be learned in every experience. I think that if nothing else, yes, we should take from both of these that life is extremely fragile and we can lose those who are closest to us in an instant. They’re in your life for a reason…
