Practice is the best of all instructors.
As per usual, I will agree yet somewhat disagree… you knew that was coming, didn’t you?
I will agree that yes, practice is the best instructor, yet only if you realize you are practicing and only if you are in a learning mindset. If you aren’t practicing and if you aren’t learning then really, you’re just performing a function – going through the motions if you will.
Practice takes a conscious effort. The big question is really, what are we actually practicing compared to what we think we’re practicing?
Also, at what point do we stop practicing and actually take action? This doesn’t mean we stop learning – it just means we stop trying and start doing…

That’s what always bothers me about going to the dentist or doctor. Why should I pay them my hard-earned cash just to support their practice! I always wanted one that already knew how to get it right!
I totally agree with you. I remember the first dog training class I attended. Each week I faithfully practiced with my dog. I put in hours and hours not heeling, not sitting, and not staying. I hadn’t quite grasped the concept of the dog was actually supposed to be DOING those things as opposed to NOT doing those things. In my head was the silly idea that one day he would just suddenly “get it”. It still makes me laugh when I think about it.
Agree with you William! Practise isn’t much of an instructor if you don’t know what you’re doing in the first place. There’s plenty of areas in my life where I became spectacularly incompetent or dysfunctional simply for lack of mentors, information or the correct version of either.
